BIOGRAPHY

Joe brings to the Everest Freestyle team a lifetime of professional medical training and high stakes teamwork. Working as a firefighter in Tacoma, WA for the last ten years has allowed Joe to continue his lifestyle taking on physical challenges for the health of others. Augmenting his work with time spent as a CPR instructor, Joe has persevered to reach this point in his career following 12 years as volunteer firefighter in Ruston, WA a significant portion of this time as Chief.

Joe’s skill expanded skill set of both evaluator and counselor will be crucial in keeping the team together and moving upward on the mountain, while remaining attentive to the details of our various goals. Working to test and assist new fire fighter recruits in physical qualification will parallel the physical challenges the team will encounter and overcome during the climb. As part of the incident response team Joe works on debriefings following stressful events. The team will be facing stress daily, and his experience dealing with similar situations will be put to use. A great motivator, Joe will bring his boundless energy and can do attitude to the Everest Freestyle Expedition this spring.

This energy has its source in an adventurous and wide ranging childhood. Born in Tacoma, Joe circumnavigated the globe twice before the age of eighteen in travels with his family to Africa, Europe and Asia. Much of this time was spent in Lagos, Nigeria where he father was Superintendent of the American International Schools. Back in the states he received a degree in drafting from Green River CC and got into the mountains. The Cascade and Olympic ranges in Washington provided the terrain, and Joe has also made the climb to the summit of Mt. Rainier. As an uncle of team member Alex Mondau, he is sure to be a great fit with the team.
