July 2nd: 'Allo Dum Baranasi'

by Phill Michael

Dawa in the Khumbu Icefall

Episode 1 of our podcast is posted at www.secretspot.tv ! Check it out!

Another stellar day in Kathmandu! B^)

One of the highlights was having 'Allo Dum Baranasi' for the first time. Imagine a potato dish...smothered in tomato sauce that has been seasoned with East Indian spices...served on a bed of rice. Heaven on a plate...not to mention good and good for you! %^P

Since I like Spinach even more than Popeye, I'm going to have to try the Palak Paneer next. =^P

Dawa came by today and we guzzled colas and talked about the future. I sent him away with one of the HD cameras. He's going to do some practice shooting and really get a  good feel for the unit. He's got plenty to play with these days.

After we got back from the Everest trek, I gave him my personal ice gear (tools, crampons, screws, etc) to KEEP! The stuff he had was pretty old and now he is rigged with some super high quality stuff. The life he saves might be his own. I have relied on that equipment while hanging hundreds of metres 'above the deck'...usually with a huge smile on my face...so I know that each piece has good energy and longevity. I can't wait to be climbing some massive steep ice face with Dawa...in the not so distant future. I guess I'm going to have to outfit myself with some new gear...B^)

The internet has been giving me corns all day...so I'm going to see if I can upload today's update and associated files...and upload the pending updates on a day where things are working a little faster...like tomorrow?! I even considered using the sat phone to upload today...but that's unnecessary. While the internet connection was actually working well, I did manage to add a few images and videos to the June 14th and 15th updates. Check 'em out!

I've processed more images and video today. THERE IS SO MUCH OF IT. It's great to reminisce and look towards further treks and climbs. I posted a picture of Dawa in the Khumbu Icefield...from July 17th...as that image really captures the nature of that superb day.

Alex emailed to say that he is going to furnish himself with a Mac laptop today, so he'll be processing some of the excellent images he took as well. Chris, Alex and myself are going to work back and forth by email, this week, to bring www.secretspoteverest.com right up to date. Sweeeeeeeet. %^)

I've almost got through 'Shantaram'. Just an awesome book. I wish it didn't have an end.

Jill gets back from Tibet tomorrow morn, so I will leave my work tower and go forth into the madness that IS the streets of Kathmandu. Prakash has arranged to have the Land Cruiser collect me at 9am, so that I can get to the airport in time to see her descend from the sky...like a little angel. =^)

I'll still likely get a fair bit of work done tomorrow...and hopefully get some more updates loaded. The June 17th update, involving Mr. Tashi, sits particularly fondly in my memory.

Jill and I head up to Nagarkot on Wednesday afternoon, but I'll be bringing the satellite modem/phone...so I will still have access to email...and be able to call the 'Loose Cannons' in LA on Friday. I can't wait to be up there. The air is fresh and the view is outrageous. Some of the images in the slideshow, at the beginning of our Episode 1 podcast, convey that.

Soon it will ALL happen...
