June 18th: Back from Base Camp

by Phill Michael

Everest Base Camp(17531ft) at the foot of the Khumbu Icefall

Dawa claims that we have enjoyed such incredible weather for the last couple of days because of our collective good nature and healthy Karma. I'd like to think that's true as well.

I smile at our good fortune as I reflect on the last couple of days...

The morning of June 16th dawned totally clear and we were treated to fantastic views. We've taken hundreds and hundreds of pictures...and processing them takes time.

Lho La, Everst and Nuptse

We shot the final sequences for Episode 1 of our podcast and will be editing when we get back to Kathmandu. As we were shooting, the skies became very clear, the wind died down to nothing...and we laughed at our good fortune. Dawa was giddy with happiness and everybody was in a good mood.

Switching back to the present...

Dawa, myself and our crew are currently in Loboche. Mr. Tashi enjoyed our company so much that he decided to walk down here with us. He tried to feed us more liquor this morning, but we declined. I much prefered the Russian Tea that Maria poured for me...flowers and all.

Dawa, being much lighter than me, was feeling the effects of the previous evening, but I felt fine. It's the only day that Dawa and I walked at a similar speed...and the only day that I ate more for breakfast. Kukuru rum is NOT Sherpa juice. %^P

What is it about this Loboche?! We were going to descend further into the valley today...but I logged onto the laptop at lunchtime...and minutes turned to hours. Anyway...it's a cool place to set up the mobile office...eat good food...and drink gallons of black tea.

The Mobile Office in Loboche

Eventually we will get to Namche Bazar and re-connect with Chris. I suspect we'll roll through there on June 20th...en route to Lukla. Right this minute, Alex and one porter are racing down to Lukla so that Alex can get on a plane to Kathmandu and eventually on another plane to Hong Kong...then onwards to Seattle. He was stressing about making all his connections...and I hope he makes everything with minimal delays and drama!

These updates take a bit of time to put together and we are on the move at the moment...covering quite a bit of ground each day...leaving not much time for communing with the laptop. Keeping up with email can be a challenge too...but I wouldn't have it any other way. It's beautiful to be able to enjoy almost seamless email contact with folks while in such remote places. I miss my Blackberry...for real. %^o

If we get stuck in Lukla, waiting for a weather window to fly to Kathmandu, I might get everything completely updated. Time will tell...as it always does.

I've ordered up spaghetti and tomato sauce tonight. Everybody has been just cold chillin' today...and a hearty meal would go down nicely. Tomorrow promises to be a long day of walking, so 'carbo- loading' would be wise. I'm really going to miss spending time with this crew. They are so attentive that it is ridiculous...and there is a real team feeling and lots of smiles from dusk until dawn...each and every day.

Time for dinner...%^P
