June 16th: A Break in the Weather

by Phill Michael

Everest Peeks out from Behind Nuptse

I slept in 2 hour chunks last night. The phone portion of our satellite package was acting up. At 3:45am in the morning, I was wondering if I was going to be able to call into the Loose Cannons. Ten minutes later everything clicked...and I heard Sonn's (producer of the Loose Cannons) voice. We were in business. I marveled at how clear the line was....despite the fact that I was at 17000ft and on the other side of the world from my Los Angeles friends. The future of communications looks bright.

The visibility was zero and it was pretty chilly outside. I crawled back into my slumber pit wondering if we would finally see a break in the weather?!

6am...totally foggy...can't see a thing. Time for a few more winks.

7am...I better rub the sleep from my eyes...am I dreaming?! No I am not. I get my closest view of Everest, peeking out from behind Nuptse...and the skies are relatively clear. At last!

Rather than spend the morning on this laptop, I am going to walk around in awe of the these breathtaking peaks and take pictures.

One has to 'make hay while the sun shines'!

More later...
