June 7th: Finally in Lukla

by Phill Michael

Dawa was right on time again and things were looking good. A bit of messing about at the airport, a short wait...and we found ourselves on the plane...this time flying to Lukla. It's a spectacular flight along the Himalaya and the landing strip at Lukla is...well...unique.

Lukla Landing Strip

Lukla was quiet and we were happy to have a little nap at a lodge while we waited for the rest of our gear to show up in a later plane.

Where we had lunch in Lukla

Lunch was at noon...and by 1:30pm, we were finally using our feet to propel ourselves towards Everest's south side Base Camp. We actually lost 200m(660ft) of altitude on the hike from Lukla to Phakding. It's hard to describe all the new sights and sounds, but they say pictures say 1000 words...so here they are:

Serving Dinner at Phakding

Dinner was welcome and delicious and we tried to play a game of scrabble after dinner, but we were all just too sleepy. As my dad always used to tell me, 'Tomorrow is another day.'
