June 5th: No Sleep...No Bed

by Phill Michael

We all stayed up most of the night getting ready for the trek.  We had hoped to upload a version of Episode 1 of our podcast, but the internet connections are painfully slow. We will do it at the next available fast connection. That might not happen until Chris gets home on June 25th. Once again, time will tell...as it always does.

Ang Dawa Sherpa collected us from the hotel just after 5am and the airport greeted us at 5:45am. Piles of gear were shifted from the vehicle to carts...and we made our way to the waiting area in the domestic terminal.

Unloading at the Airport

All reports said that we had to wait for the weather to clear to land in Lukla. We were all exhausted.

Alex Sleeps in the Airport

Minutes turned to hours and we strobed in and out of sleep. I got to know Ang Dawa a little better. What a gentle, capable soul. I feel lucky to have found him and I am looking forward to climbing to the Roof of the World with him in 2008!

At noon they cancelled the flight. Try again tomorrow. Time to head back to the Kathmandu Guest House and catch up on sleep. We ate pasta for lunch and dinner. I typed away...and napped...while Chris and Alex went to see 'Pirates of the Caribbean 3'.

It's 1am right now...and June 6th in Kathmandu is looking wet. Dawa will be here in about four hours. Hopefully we can just cruise to the airport and get on the plane to Lukla. I'm looking forward to the first day of hiking...but now it's time to sleep...:^O  zzzzzzzzzzzz
